There are a lot of things that happen after the wedding that you don't think about until...well after the wedding. When I came home from the hotel the morning after the big day, I was suddenly faced with a couple of immediately pressing tasks before we left for our honeymoon.
Firstly, I had to pack. I hadn't even remotely packed for our honeymoon and our flight left at 7:00 that evening! Luckily my mom and sister helped me with this, and we were done pretty quickly.

I also had to wrap up the top layer of our wedding cake to freeze it for our one year anniversary! Storing your wedding cake, or pieces of your wedding cake needs to happen right away if you're leaving for your honeymoon. We took some time to wrap the cake in plastic wrap and foil because that was all I had on hand. I just read online that you shouldn't keep your cake on a piece of cardboard because it will dry it out even more...whoops. I clearly didn't really know the "proper" way to store a cake for a year, but here's hoping that it's still semi-good next May!
Looking at this picture now...I actually don't think this is our actual wedding cake! That looks like chocolate on the bottom there, and is that all icing on top? LOL I'm confused....
We stored it in our mini freezer where it's currently taking up way too much space. Lesson learned and advice: I WISH we had just cut 2 slices of it to save because there's no reason for us to have a whole cake to ourselves in May.
We almost had a crisis when a friend came over this summer and unplugged our mini-freezer in order to charge her phone. We noticed the freezer leaking the next day! Luckily, we caught it in time, and everything was still very frozen inside. So all was not lost!
Did/Will you be saving the top tier or pieces of your cake? If you did, was it still good one year later?

Yes, we froze the top of our wedding cake but it wasn't as big as yours. But...you know I would help you with anything and devouring your cake is no exception. Just say the word and I'll be so there to help!
Haha, well here's the story of the top tier of our cake:
My parents froze it for us when we left on the honeymoon, and then for some reason we decided to have some for dessert the night we returned from the honeymoon (and the day before we moved, so we stayed at my parents' place). Well, we got to have one slice and then forgot to bring it with us when we moved, so my parents ate the rest of it. Our bakery will (supposedly) supply us with a duplicate of the top tier of our wedding cake for free for the 1 year anniversary, so here's hoping that's true! Otherwise my parents ate my wedding cake!
We opted not to freeze. I have a friend who froze hers and she was less than thrilled with the result. Plus there's like no space in the freezer.
I really like the idea of saving only a few slices instead of the entire cake. Great idea.
Since we had cupcakes (that were totally obliterated), we did not save our wedding cake. I was thinking of getting a small cake from our baker as a suprise for Matt for our 1st anniversary. We'll be in Cincinnati the week before for another friend's wedding.
Who unplugs someone's freezer without telling them?
Our bakery actually asked that we don't freeze our top tier. They said that if we come back they will make us a new top tier on our 1 year anniversary so that it is fresh. I definitely agreed with them. And like you said, it takes up so much room that at some point I would just get frustrated with it and I would probably end up pulling it out, haha!
We saved a chunk of one of our sheet cakes. Well... my sister saved it for me, then we brought it home afterwards. It's just in a plastic baggy thing. Hopefully it's still good in July! :)
We didn't save our cake but did manage to save a couple slices, which we ate at my mom's house after we got back from our honeymoon. Leaving the next day is tough! I still wish we could have avoided an 8 a.m. flight the morning after our wedding, but with the schedule for our cruise, it was the only way.
I really didn't think about freezing our cake till days after the wedding, so I said- "Well why not have it on our one week anniversary”. So that’s what we did.
My cake topper was "lost" until we took our cake OUT of the freezer! The dumb venue put it in the freezer box... nice! We had about 3 days to get that done because we left for SD like, Monday I think.
Glad that melting freezer didn't ruin anything. Those things can be crazy!
i cannot wait to eat my wedding cake in five months!
We are planning on freezing ours, I have just gotten recommendations to wrap it really well. I have heard of people cutting it into 12 pieces and have a piece once a month on your monthly anniversaries - thought that was a cute idea as well, esp if you have limited freezer space and/or a big top tier!
We are doing a cup cake truck so I'm not sure. We will hopefully remember to tell them to set some aside for us to save for our one year anny..if not we will just make it a special date to go out on our one year any and get some new fresh cupcakes :)
